Dr Peter Baird

Dr Peter Baird is a Perth based specialist cardiac anaesthetist who enjoys helping patients get through their operation as safely and comfortably as possible.  


Background:


Dr Baird completed a Bachelor of Science in 1996 at UNSW majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics.  He then studied medicine (MBBS) at the University of Sydney completing his studies in 2003.  He went on to complete his fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) in 2010 and worked in Sydney as a GP in private practice as well as contracting to the Australian Defense Forces.  During this time, Dr Baird was a Medical Officer for the Royal Australian Navy Clearance Diving Team 1 and gained experience in diving, hyperbaric and submarine medicine.


In 2012 Dr Baird began studying to become a specialist anaesthetist and was selected for a rotational training program at St George Hospital in Sydney.  His anaesthesia training included sub-specialty terms in paediatrics, obstetrics, neuro anaesthesia, trauma, cardiothoracics, upper and lower GI, pain management, breast/endocrine and orthopedics.  He moved to Perth in 2017 where he completed sub-specialty fellowship training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia including anaesthesia for heart and lung transplantation.  


Dr Baird is an admitted Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.  Dr Baird also has additional qualifications including a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Ultrasound (transoesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography) from the University of Melbourne and a Graduate Certificate in Health Education from James Cook University.  He has presented at 2 international meetings in cardiac anaesthesia and is currently completing a Graduate Certificate in Medical Perfusion (operating the Heart/Lung bypass machine). 


Current Practice:

Dr Baird currently works a mix of public and private practice in Perth.  He enjoys a public appointment at Fiona Stanley Hospital where he works as a cardiac and general anaesthetist for open heart surgery, lung and lung cancer surgery and heart and lung transplantation.  He is accredited in most of the major private hospitals in Perth where he provides anaesthesia care for a variety of sub specialties including plastic and cosmetic surgery, neurosurgery, cardiology procedures, maxilla-facial surgery, ophthalmology, gastroenterology and cardiothoracic surgery.
